If there’s one animal everyone wants to see in Alaska, it’s whales (followed closely by moose and bear). On our day crossing through Frederick Sound, we spent most of the midday dancing with some humpback whales feeding in the area. Among the several bays and coves we visited on this day, Scenery Cove was most aptly named – it was a picturesque spot to soak in the stunning mountains on all sides. There are lots of great things to do in Ketchikan, so you can easily fill a day there before embarkation, or spend even longer if you have the time. After flying from Seattle to Ketchikan in the morning, Marissa and I explored the small town while waiting to go board our ship.

Afterward, we set out on another set of afternoon activities, and again I opted for kayaking. It was such a peaceful yet active way to see the land up close. After three days aboard the ship, it was weird to spend most of the day on land in Wrangell, Alaska.
The sun deck has our open bridge and a covered sitting area; the Lounge Deck features wrap-around glass in the lounge with cheery bar as well as the hot tub on the bow viewing area. The Main deck features the cozy dining room and the EZ Dock launch platform. The recently renovated 74-guest Wilderness Explorer is equipped for action, adventure, and exploration. Its interior complements the outside and public and private spaces are loaded with amenities. Dinner was normally a sit down, three course meal. Each night, we could choose from three main course items and there was always a vegetarian option.

This can be any activity ranging from kayaking to skiff tours to hiking; see the next section of this post for more info about excursions. The 76-guest Wilderness Discoverer underwent extensive refurbishment in early 2011 and guest raves are still flowing. Expedition is top-of-mind with this vessel; and adventure and discovery lay at its heart. The interior complements the outside and public and private spaces are loaded with amenities.
Special dietary requirements are happily accomodated with advance notice. As you can see above, UnCruise Alaska cabins are cozy but sufficient for a night of rest after a day of adventure. By Alaska cruise standards, we had a short route of roughly 700 nautical miles (if my memory serves). For context, most large cruise ships cover up 700 nautical miles in one day.
Time to leave behind crowded school schedules, virtual meetings, soccer mom days, and family meals (at least for 7 nights). That means getting away from it all with our fully adult-only adventures! A special thanks to Un-Cruise Adventures for hosting our stay on the Wilderness Adventurer and giving us a unique tour of Southeast Alaska. There wasn’t a meal we didn’t enjoy, but a few of our favorites included scallops in butter sauce, duck, potato curry, and crab legs. Each guided activity was generally no more than three hours long, so we usually picked two activities — one in the morning and one after lunch.

We woke up on the last day of our Alaskan UnCruise to disembark in Juneau, the capital of Alaska. It was luckily not a ship day for larger cruise companies, so we had the town to ourselves. Marissa and I met up with Midgi from Juneau Food Tours to explore the blossoming food scene in this tiny town.
